Born 1947 in Bronxville, New York, Louise Lawler has photographed artworks in private homes, public buildings,museums, galleries, auction houses and storage areas for nearly thirty years. Lawler's images challenge viewers to consider the contexts in which artworks exist once they have left the artist's studio and enter the world as commodities. She has had one-person exhibitions at the Wexner Center, Columbus, Ohio; Dia:Beacon, New York; Museum fur Gugenwartskunst, Basel; Portikus, Frankfurt; and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C. Her work has been included ingroup exhibitions at institutions such as: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Palazzo Grassi, Venice; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Colleccion Jumex, MexicoCity; and the Museu d'Art Contemporani, Barcelona. Lawler has participated in the 2008, 2000 and 1991 editions of the Whitney Biennial.
