Lisa Béar is a New York-based writer, filmmaker and photographer. She studied philosophy at Bedford College, University of London. In the 70's, after moving to New York City, she founded Avalanche with Willoughby Sharp, and is now a contributing editor to Bomb. Her experimental films and videos, including Oued Nefifik: A Foreign Movie (1982), Earthglow (1983) and Force of Circumstance (1989) have been shown at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, the Festival of the Other Avant-Garde, the Sao Paulo Biennial, Anthology Film Archives, The Kitchen and the Museum of Modern Art. For her short stories, published in Between C and D and Bomb, she received writing fellowships from NYFA (1990) and the Edward Albee Foundation (1994). She has taught film at Columbia University, NYU Tisch and the School of Visual Arts and presented her work at universities and alternative venues throughout North America and Europe. Béar is the author of Beyond the Frame: Dialogues with World Filmmakers (Praeger, 2007).

Liza Béar's latest visiting artist presentations and group shows include TorpedoBok/Kunsthalle, Oslo, Norway (December 2010); "Argument of the Eye", Union Docs, Brooklyn (January 2011); Cranbrook Academy of Art, Detroit (February 2011); "Art, Access and Decay", Subliminal Projects and Echo Park Film Center, Los Angeles (April 2011) and the ICA, London (May 2012).

Her photographs have been shown in "Spacial Complexities", LL Gallery, NY, (1998); "Heroines and Heroes II", Beacon, New York, (1999); "Artists Against the War", Rome, Italy (2005), and at Dinter Fine Art (November 2010 and August 2011). ). She is currently participating in MyBlockNYC, a digital presentation in the Venice Biennale US Architecture pavilion.
