John Battle was born in Princeton, New Jersey in 1953. He studied Art and Architecture at Dartmouth College with Varujan Boghosian. In 1976, he set up a studio in Boston, MA, exhibiting his sculptures at the Helen Shlien Gallery. After moving to New York City in 1979, he had one-person shows at Centro Mexicano del Libro and Automation House. His fascination with metal led him to study forging techniques, which ultimately led to a commission to design and fabricate two decorative gallery room doorways for the Hispanic Society of America. This assignment marked the beginning of a forty-year career as a blacksmith in the decorative arts, doing custom private commissions throughout the Hamptons and New York City. His sculpture was recently shown at The Keyes Gallery in Sag Harbor, NY.
