Pen on paper
This series of drawings was created while the artist was living in Bodhgaya, India for four months. Bodhgaya is where the Buddha achieved liberation 2,500 years ago, and is today visited by a constant stream of pilgrims from all the Buddhist traditions. Moved by the devotion of the diverse practitioners at Mahabodhi Temple as well as street life in the town of Bodhgaya, Matas created this series of drawings, five of which are included here.
Jonathan Matas was born in Seattle. He has been drawing and painting his whole life without ever stopping. Among his many visuals inspirations have been Northwest Coast Indigenous Arts, hip hop and graffiti, Buddhist arts, and the modern masters such as Picasso and Miro. Matas's work explores the possibilities of spontaneity, with an emphasis on experimentation with color and worlds of detail. He maintains a nomadic lifestyle and currently resides in India.RETURN TO CATALOG
