Charcoal on Braille magazine paper
The Braille paper has the peculiarity of a rhythm pattern that is not regular and yet obviously, being a language with the equivalent of letters, has also elements of repetition. Its aesthetic likeness to pixelation, the alphabet of the digital image and its nature of being an actual language, attracted the artist to work directly on it with various techniques: charcoal frottage, rubbing against charcoal sized paper. Having language as a background turned out to be an interesting starting point: what if there are black holes in the language, what if an action takes place before it? What if the world of materiality breaks into it, as the rubbings of threads do?
Artist Bio: Artist Bio: Born in Milan, Maria Scarpini graduated from Universita' Internazionale dell'Arte in Florence with a Diploma in Conservation of artworks. She worked for several institutions such as PAC in Milan (Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea), the Palazzo dei Conservatori and the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome, The Guggenheim Museum in New York. She established her own private practice in New York 2003. In 2013 she collaborated with composer Jed Distler in the outdoor event Make Music New York, choreographing 180 keyboards featuring Jed Distler composition "Broken Record" winner of the Award for the world's larger keyboard ensemble. She is currently working on the set design of Jed Distler Opera " Tools”. As a painter she is self-taught. Her work as a Conservator gave her a close connection with the physical presence of the artwork. She has lived and worked in Milan, Rome, New York.
