Wooden carving, man. Ivory Coast  Circa 1940s

Wooden carving, statue of a man stroking his beard, by Baule master carver. This kind of carving would be made when head of family dies and a successor is being chosen. The beard denotes that to become a chief or king, the man traditionally must have hair on his face.
