Wooden mask on wooden and metal stand, Gabon  Circa 1950-60

Created by Punu master carver. Mounted on wooden and metal stand. This type of carving was typically created to mark the birth of a baby, or when a member of the family died. Often the mask was carved in the likeness of family member. The mask was worn in a ceremonial dance, attached by raffia.
